Protect a PDF

Works entirely in your browser — your document is never uploaded to a server. Results are measured from the actual output file, and limitations are stated openly.

One PDF in. It gets an open-password with AES-256 encryption, fully offline.

Passwords are used only in your browser this session — they are never stored or sent anywhere.

Protecting questions

How do I password-protect a PDF?

Drop the file in, set an open password, and optionally an owner password that controls editing rights, then download. AES-256 encryption is applied in your browser — the document never reaches a server.

Are my password and my PDF sent anywhere?

Neither. Both are used only inside the page you are working in. Nothing is stored, logged or transmitted, and closing the tab leaves no trace of the file behind.

Can I compress a PDF and then protect it?

Yes, and that order usually works best: compress first so the copy you lock is small, then protect it. The file you encrypt is the compressed one, so the final size stays low.

Can I remove the password from a PDF I own?

Yes, as long as you can already open the file. The unlock tool rebuilds the document without the lock, keeping its text, quality and pages intact — no re-encoding involved.

Encryption that stays on your device

Protecting a PDF applies AES-256 encryption — the same standard governments use for classified material — to the open password you choose, and optionally an owner password that governs editing rights. The process is entirely local: your document and your password exist only inside the browser tab you are working in.

Because encryption and processing are paired here, there is no moment where the document exists unencrypted on a server between two services. Have a locked file you already open yourself? The unlock tool removes a known password losslessly — and if the file also needs to be smaller, compress it first, then lock the smaller copy. See the PDF tools hub for the full suite.
